2021 Census data release

By June 28, 2022 Uncategorised

The first release of the 2021 census data was published today by the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) at 10 am.

The census data captures a range of topics related to Australia’s population including Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and culturally and linguistically diverse communities.

CIRCA’s team tuned in to the live stream of the launch where we learnt that:

– The census had a 96% response rate
– India has become the third-largest country of birth, behind Australia and England
– Mandarin continues to be the most common language other than English used at home, followed by Arabic
– As compared to 2016, there was a 25% increase in people identifying as Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander

This latest census data also shows that Australia is becoming more diverse. Almost 50% of all Australians have at least one parent born overseas and over 800,000 people identified as Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander. These demographics emphasise a need to reflect this rich cultural diversity in Australian research and evaluation.
