World No Tobacco Day on 31 May draws global attention to the preventable death and disease caused by tobacco. The day also encourages smokers to start their quit journey or not smoke for 24 hours. We welcome this year’s theme – Tobacco: threat to our environment – to promote awareness of the tobacco industry’s damage to ecosystems and contribution to climate change. While smoking rates are generally falling in Australia, some population groups, like Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, continue to have much higher rates of tobacco use, indicating there is more work to do. Tobacco control programs and campaigns that aim to reach specific cultural groups need to be specifically tailored to these communities, their smoking behaviours and local contexts.
